FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NH Right to Life celebrates legislature’s rejection of two abortion-till-birth constitutional amendments

(Concord, NH Feb 16, 2024) New Hampshire Right to Life (NHRTL) celebrates yesterday’s 14-9 vote by the NH Senate to decisively reject CACR24[0], an extreme constitutional amendment that would have legalized the aborting of healthy preborn babies at 8 and 9 months. This followed the rejection of a similar amendment by the House, CACR23[1].

NH Right to Life President Jason Hennessey said:

These amendments that were pushed by Democratic leaders would have legalized the aborting of 8 and 9 month children and could have opened the door to men forcing unwanted abortions upon women. Instead of seeking to abuse and endanger women and children like this, society needs to empower and protect them.

In the hearing for CACR23 and during the floor vote, Rep Bob Lynn (former Chief Justice of the NH Supreme Court, and publicly pro-choice) questioned whether the amendment could open the door to forced abortions by granting anyone (including a child’s father) the right to an abortion, not just a mother[2]. To NHRTL’s knowledge, this concern was never refuted and no amendment was offered to fix the language.

Every voting Democrat in the NH Senate and House voted in favor of CACR24 or CACR23, respectively.

CACR23’s language around 24 weeks would pose little impediment in practice to obtaining 8 and 9 months abortions of healthy children due to the belief of several physicians who perform abortions that abortion is always justified[3].

According to a Harvard-Harris poll, only 10% of Americans believe that abortion should be legal through all 9 months of pregnancy[4].

NH Right to Life is New Hampshire’s largest and longest-standing organization dedicated to the pro-life cause.
