Tragic Miscarriage
TLC reality alum Jessa Duggar Seewald recently experienced a heartbreaking miscarriage.
A couple of weeks ago, Seewald shared a video about her miscarriage on YouTube. She expressed her heartbreak after the loss of her fifth child and shared she needed a dilation and curettage to remove the child from her body.
Is D&C an Abortion?
A D&C procedure is not only used to directly end the life of a preborn child. According to the Mayo Clinic, the procedure can:
- diagnose medical problems after menopause
- treat uterine cancer or uterine polyps
- check unusual endometrial cells
- remove a molar pregnancy
- remove a preborn child who died and stayed in a woman’s uterus
It is tragic for women, men, and families to go through a miscarriage. News outlets should not be using Jessa’s story to push a narrative of unrestricted abortion for any reason.
A direct abortion ends the life of a preborn human child, making it dead. A miscarriage (or a stillbirth later in pregnancy), is when a child naturally dies, without outside forces.
Media Response
News outlets, such as Jezebel, Parade, and People Magazine, incorrectly stated she went through a direct abortion. Since she experienced a D&C procedure, news outlets are seizing the opportunity to promote abortion ideals.
So much so that in her YouTube video, Jessa responded to these accusations.
In a pinned comment on her video, she mentioned that she went through a D&C procedure before – removing placental fragments after a pregnancy.
To the news outlets directly (emphasis added):
“There’s a world of difference between someone dying and someone being killed. To equate one to the other— and to a mother grieving the loss of her baby no less— is severely distasteful.“
Healing is Possible
Miscarriages and stillbirths affect a lot of families in the United States. Our country does have several organizations with healing resources, but just being a listening ear matters to women and men.
